A subject of much concern in the media and press lately has been Canada’s weak bail requirements which have been watered down by the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms.

In an article by Lorne Gunter in the Toronto Sun on 5 October, 2024 he discusses the recent shooting of a Metro Toronto police officer by a man out on bail:

Basically, it is still super easy to get bail. The Liberals’ 2019 rules instructed judges in all cases to release offenders as quickly as possible and with minimal conditions. Rarely was bail to be denied. This, the Liberals argued at the time, would speed the reintegration of criminals into society and help them see the error of their ways… That philosophy has not been changed with this year’s amendments, except in some limited cases of spousal abuse and in cases where the suspect has been charged with the same violent offence he had been convicted of in the previous five years”.

So the bad guys are getting out of jail free and using smuggled guns to commit crimes while out on bail with, what are likely again, stolen guns. And, what about the Federal Government’s flagship policy of buying back all those guns to make Canada safer?

As reported in the Toronto Sun by Gage Haubrich, (Gage Haubrich is the Prairie director for the Canadian Taxpayers Federation) on 11 October, 2024 under the heading: “Ottawa’s gun buyback is rightly falling apart” we find the following comment:

The buyback is broken. Law-abiding firearms owners don’t want to lose their guns. It doesn’t go far enough for gun control advocates. And taxpayers don’t want to pick up the massive bill”.

All our political leaders seem to have done is upset everyone! Gun owners don’t like the current laws, anti-gun advocates don’t like the current laws and the public can’t afford the current laws. Government in-action!

In the comment section of the Sun article I came across the following comment:

With the pathetic state of our military in Canada, it would only make sense to have trained and vetted Canadians keep their firearms. Regular training should be mandatory in order to qualify. Who knows if and when the flag waving masked “protesters” we see every day will increase their efforts? The Liberals aren’t doing anything, so we have to do it ourselves”.

This is something I touched upon in an earlier article in which I suggested that Canada emulate the United States’ civilian Marksmanship Program, established in 1903, with their national firearms training program. We may need something like that sooner than we think given what is now going on in Europe and the number of so-called terrorists found hiding in the weeds here at home. Oh, Canada!

My question to the politicians is this: “have any of the bad guys who are out on bail for criminal charges involving a firearm shot any turkeys with their smuggled, assault-styled rifles this Thanksgiving weekend”? Please let me know.

Hope you enjoyed your turkey folks and hey, it is only a couple a weeks until deer camp opens this year. What say you then, Mr. Prime Minister?
