He is gone. Elvis has left the building. The problem is, or course, the rats still inhabit the ship. We now
have a new leader for the Federal Liberal party and the comedy continues to run. New clown, new suit,
same pleading position with “please vote for me”. What did the new guy do? He brought back the
retreads to fill cabinet positions and advisory posts. Oh yeah, he banned more guns.
The polls say the Liberals are on the rise once again. Perhaps they are, but, whenever they are in doubt
about their popularity they seem to fall back on the one issue that seems to stick to the wall and receive
attention from the press they so dearly fund and support: Gun control. So, are they really in control?
No, the fear of the current United States regime seems to be in control. But wait, the Russians are
coming.
From the website run by CP24 of 15 April, 2025 I find the following opening argument by Joanna
Lavoie:
“Gun control must be a priority this federal election and beyond, say several Toronto-based
organizations who are urging voters to choose candidates and parties that offer “made-in-Canada,
evidence-based solutions to reduce gun violence in all its forms.”
A priority, they say. After nearly ten years of doing nothing but virtue signalling over gun issues, the
antis are now calling for a “made-in-Canada” solution to the gang bangers after-hours activities which
so deeply affect all our communities. Does this mean they will actually issue cheques for guns?
At the same time while watching the television news this morning, I heard about a shooting that took
the lives of two people in east Toronto once again. I have no doubt that if the gun control groups could
eliminate all firearms, this shooting would not have taken place, right?
I don’t need to delve into the meat of the argument in this article because we all know it by heart by
now. Firearms owners are the bad guys above and beyond everyone else. They even have the nerve to
refer to “evidence-based solutions…” when in fact, when these same solutions were presented to the
Senate during the evolution of Bill C-21, they were rejected out of hand by the Senators.
With the upcoming Federal election just around the corner it seems that Canada is, yet again, going to
be blessed with either a Liberal majority or another minority government in Ottawa. Not that Mr.
Carney will do a bad job, he probably will do as much or more than the last occupant of the Prime
Minister’s seat, which is very little for most Canadians who come from, you know, that other class.
All eyes seem to be focused south of the border on Mr. Trump at this time. Anti-gun advocates are
again trying to equate firearms ownership in Canada with the American fascination with guns and gun
violence. They are welcome to their views on life, however, they are ignoring a growing threat that is
being noticed by those across the seas in Europe, Mother Russia’s aggression.
At the same time Canada is being heavily criticized by NATO allies for not pulling its weight with that
organization, our politicians keep coming up with excuses not to pay our fair share of the cost of
running this organization. So, how should Canada answer when asked why they lag so far behind?
It might be easy to target the lax attitude of our political parties if they weren’t all culpable when it
comes to this issue. For several generations and political iterations now, Canada has buried its
collective head in the sand and refused to pony up the bucks when asked. Why? Oh, the United States
will stand up for us when trouble comes knocking, no? Hell, no. Not with Trump in the driver’s seat.
I read recently that countries such as Finland, home to Lapua and Vhitavuori, have initiated a program
to increase civilian shooters in their country and build several hundred new shooting ranges to train
new shooters and providing incentives for people to join. Now why would a so-called peaceful society
do such a dastardly thing as encourage people to learn how to shoot? You guessed it, they live right
next door to the ever-present threat of Mother Russia.
Perhaps, along with forking over our 2% of GDP as required, we could start to think about what the
Finns are doing to prepare their population in case they need to rely on knowledgeable people to
perhaps defend the homeland. If you will remember, when Russia attacked the Ukraine, the first step
the Ukrainians took was to hand out over eight thousand firearms to its citizens in order to assist in
defending the country and look were they are today!
If the liberal post modernists are looking for evidence based solutions as mentioned above, perhaps this
would be something to think about. Realistic, pragmatic and strong gun legislation is a must. Perhaps
doing something legislatively constructive in Parliament, with the authority of Parliament, and not just
a band of Order-In-Counsel elitists.
It has become clear that our sovereignty has been called into question lately. Who do we have
protecting our vast resources in the north? Why a handful of Inuit, although highly talented and
dedicated folks, on a few snow machines, patrolling one of the largest cold deserts on the planet. What
could possibly go wrong?
During the Bill C-21 debacle the Government kept saying it was looking at the example of other
jurisdictions to formulate their approach, if it supported their mandate, of course. Perhaps now they
should look at the approach taken in Europe and the Nordic countries and give themselves an evidence-
based reality check.
Unfortunately, when politicians do look north at our close neighbour and actually see the Russians
coming, they will wring their hands, cling to their liberal polls and cry; “we thought the Americans
would protect us”!
Sure they will. Maybe Rome had it right in the first place: si vis pacem para bellum (“if you want
peace, prepare for war”).
