Well, it’s over. The election I mean. So, the Liberals won another minority government and are now trying to mend fences with the United States, if they can. Mr. Carney, who may not even have a home in Canada yet, made his first trip to Washington to visit Mr. Trump in person and is now deconstructing his experience with both the Provincial Premiers and the media.
I can imagine the questions:
“Mr. Carney, what was your impression of President Trump?”
“Well, Bob, he is rock stupid and has bad hair and a weird tan”.
“Do you know if he is still going to try to take over Canada as he has suggested?”
Well, he might. But hey, we can’t even give Quebec away so who knows how enthusiastic he will remain”.
“Do you think he will rescind the tariffs?”
“I can’t answer that, it is classified, you will have to check with the CBC”.
Now some folks are starting to believe that things will brighten up once the G7 meetings get under way this summer here in Canada. Perhaps Mr. Trump will back off a bit and take it easy on some of his tariffs. We just hope he won’t be as pissed as he was when he was last here when, according to him, Governor Trudeau was in power. I think he will come here primarily to see if this country is worth taking over (yes, you can golf up here).
Yeah, I know, some folks here would not object as they would hope to gain access to the United States’ Second Amendment to the Constitution, which of course, the content of which Mr. Trump has proven he has little actual knowledge. Don’t count on a win here.
Firearms owners in Canada can take no comfort in the fact that the former Liberal gatekeepers to the firearms issue are back working for Mr. Carney. At least for now he hired both Rocky and Bullwinkle back. This means potentially more bans on common firearms while the bad guys continue to run their import arms businesses from the US to Canada, unmolested.
While North American made cars now appear to be headed for great increases in price, as will the cost of living, so will such items as components for reloading, and manufactured ammunition that is imported. Remember, Trump loves tariffs. One can only hope that Canadian distributors can tap into foreign suppliers for both components and ammunition. Again, don’t count on it.
The meeting in Washington seems to be playing out too smoothly. Both Mr. Carney and Mr. Trump seem to be going through this interpretive dance just a little too adroitly. Me thinks that in their back room talks, Mr. Carney had some words of warning for El Presidente.
Statistic show that the United States of America is in debt to the tune of $36.22 trillion dollars. For the uninitiated, it is more than the cost of an NHL franchise. The debt is increasing by $4.42 dollars per day (who figures this out?). That comes to $108.135 dollars per person or about what Vladimir Guerrero Jr. makes each time he comes to the plate.
That being said, what do you think Mr. Carney whispered into Mr. Trump’s ear behind closed doors? I think I have some idea, given our new Prime Minister’s past record. It may have gone something like this:
“Listen Donny, I got international connections. You and your country are in deep debt for which even a Shylock like yourself can’t overcome. So, here’s the deal, you back off this bullshit idea of taking over Canada, drop the tariff stuff or I put the word out to have your loans called and you will be in it up to your ears and bankrupt, cause I know a guy who knows a guy who can make that call, hear me?”
So, it’s over. The election I mean. But is it over for us with the US? Time will tell.
